Author Tip: Using Leading Lines

One of the easiest ways to make your images more dynamic and interesting is by using leading lines. Leading lines draw the viewerâ??s eye through the scene, generate dramatic tension by creating or dividing negative space, lead the eye to the subject, or they can do any combination of these.

Leading lines exist everywhere, both in nature and in man-made structures. Oftentimes when composing a photograph we unwittingly include leading lines because in real life, just as in a photograph, our eyes tend to be drawn to leading lines.

The key is to recognize leading lines so you can use them more effectively in your photographs. Some leading line subjects are obvious, a path or trail leading off into the distance, railroad tracks, handrails or stairways. Some leading lines are less obvious, the curving shore line of a beach or the gentle sloping curve of a hill or mountain leading off into the distance.

Keep an eye out for leading lines and incorporate them into your images when you can. Keep in mind that the leading line doesnâ??t always have to be the key subject, sometimes the subtle use of a leading line is best.

Snail Shell In this almost surreal shot of a snail shell, the spiral draws your eye into the image. I purposely underexposed the shot to let the background go dark to further focus the eye on the center of the photograph. Super Mario Galaxy 2

Super Mario Galaxy 2 is an action platformer for Wii that continues the space-based fun begun by the 2007 runaway hit Super Mario Galaxy. For example, when Yoshi eats a "Dash Pepper" he is able to move at hyper speed allowing the pair to literally run up the side of walls. Also, after eating a Blimp Fruit power-up Yoshi can swells up and floats like a blimp, taking Mario with him to areas of the game otherwise unreachable. Key Game Features Mario collects stars as he travels from galaxy to galaxy. Every level is new, but the game retains the charm, sense of wonder and beauty in line with Mario's history. Mario works his way through the various levels, sometimes upside-down, sometimes floating from place to place. On some stages, Mario can find an egg, smash it open and hop onto the back of Yoshi. Yoshi can use his tongue to grab items and shoot them back at enemies, or to snag attach points and swing across chasms. Yoshi has an interesting diet. When he eats a Dash Pepper, he gets so hot and frenzied he can run up steep inclines and vertical walls. When he eats a Blimp Fruit, he inflates like a balloon and floats to new heights. New powerups include a drill that Mario uses to tunnel through the planet's surface all the way to the other side of a planet. Michael Jackson: This Is It [Blu-ray]

It's hard not to watch This Is It without feeling a mixture of sorrow and elation. When he passed away in the summer of 2009, Michael Jackson was in the midst of rehearsals for his final tour, an ambitious 50-date engagement. In editing 120 hours of rehearsal footage together, Jackson producer Kenny Ortega proves that it would've been an event for the ages. Michael performs material that spans his career, from a Motown medley to multi-platinum hits from Off the Wall, Thriller, and Bad. Though he hadn't toured in 10 years, it becomes instantly apparent, despite rumors to the contrary, that Jackson was still in full possession of that unmistakable voice--high-pitched whoops and all--and that he still had the gravity-defying moves of a man half his age. Jackson and Ortega also collaborated on some real showstoppers, such as a graveyard-set "Thriller"; an imposing "They Don't Care About Us," in which several dancers appear to morph into thousands; and a film noir sequence in which the singer slides in and out of Gilda and other black-and-white classics, singing "Smooth Criminal" all the while. Not everything works, like the Jackson 5 numbers, in which he flubs a few lyrics, claiming that his earpiece isn't working properly, but as he readily acknowledges, "That's what rehearsal is for." It's a tragedy that he didn't get the chance to share this dazzling show with the world, but Ortega allows fans to feel as if it actually happened--at least onscreen. --Kathleen C. Fennessy
